Puri Bahasa
15 MarWhat am I doing this week, you ask? I am currently in Yogyakarta, Indonesia taking 6 hours of Indo language classes per day. It’s been exhausting, but really rewarding… I probably should have done this when I first moved to Indonesia over a year ago!
If you want to learn Indo, you should check out Puri Bahasa Language School.
Laos Cooking School
13 MarI recently took a cooking class while in Luang Prabang, Laos. I am not much of a chef, but it was fun to go with a couple friends and learn something new. We did a class through Tamarind Cooking School and it included a trip to the market in the morning to learn about different ingredients, then a drive to the beautiful cooking space in a quiet jungly looking area. We cooked Mok with fish, chicken stuffed in lemongrass (with other stuff in it), buffalo stew and sticky rice with fruit for desert. The teacher was super awesome and really knew his stuff, but unfortunately the lady standing to my left was super not awesome and annoyed me for 90% of the class.
Here are some highlights!

This is from a visit to the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I spent a day there feeding, bathing and watching elephants that have been rehabilitated from the logging and tourism industries. If you ever go to Thailand, don’t ever do an elephant ride… some of the elephants at this sanctuary had broken spines as a result of carrying big fat tourists (just kidding – it was from unsuitable harnesses and seats).
Murmuration
8 DecThis video is amazing! It was filmed in Ireland by 2 girls canoeing – a flock of thousands of starlings turning and twisting.
Kalimantan
7 DecTwo weeks ago we went on a 3 day/2 night river boat trip in Kalmintan (the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo). Borneo is known for its orangutans. As an endangered species, there are many rehabilitation centers in Kalimantan that help reintroduce orphaned babies and formerly captive orangutans back into the wild. A famous one is called Camp Leakey – we were able to visit this one and 3 others in the national park.
Orangutans actually originate from Indonesia – from Borneo and Sumatra. “Orang” means person and “utan” means jungle in Indonesian – jungle person!
